The Groves Pecan Festival was held this weekend, October 26-29, at Lions Park in Groves and, as always, did not disappoint. The weather was perfect for a small town fall festival. The air was full of the smells of pork-ca-bobs and funnel cakes. The Pecan Festival has no charge for parking and free admission. The festival features carnival rides, pie eating contest, entertainment, a pet show, a cooking with pecans contest, horseshoe tournament, craft booths, and the always popular food vendors.

The theme of the 2017 Groves Pecan Festival was “Fun in a Nutshell,” and in a nutshell the festival was super fun! The Pie Eating contest was a crowd pleaser! The Cooking with Pecans Contest awarded over $500 in prize money in three categories; appetizers, entrees and desserts. The Pet Show was a good time for kids and adults alike. They all came together to make a fantastic weekend.

The carnival midway was very impressive. There were rides for all ages including the ever popular Ferris Wheel, Tornado, Full Tilt, and the crowd pleaser Tilt-a-Whirl. Carnival goers could purchase coupons for a dollar a piece, or a wristband. Prior to the festival the Groves Chamber of Commerce also sold Pecan Festival Mega Passes, which were good for the entire festival! Karli and my niece and nephew loved all the rides and spent most of the weekend riding!

The food vendors were in my opinion the highlight of the festival. They offered everything under the sun including; ice cream, funnel cakes, sno cones, pecan pie, curly fries, gumbo, hamburgers, barbecue, pork-ca-bobs, boudin balls, nachos, crawfish pistolettes, and freshly squeezed lemonade. The Groves Chamber of Commerce sold pecan pies. Everything we tried was great. The crawfish pistolettes by Bayou Wheels were sinfully delicious! I can’t wait to have them again next year!

There were numerous craft booths offering just about anything you could think of. The Lee Rogers Pavilion had entertainment running all weekend long. Saturday morning started with the Pecan Festival Parade along 39th Street, and was very impressive.

The Groves Pecan Festival is quite honestly our favorite Southeast Texas festival. It is a small town festival that offers something for everyone. You just can’t beat free admission. Every part of the festival was “Fun in a Nutshell!” The Groves Pecan Festival is put on by the Groves Chamber of Commerce, located at 4399 Main Avenue, Groves. They can be found on the web at and on Facebook at Judging from the smiles we saw the whole weekend, everyone who attended had a blast! Make sure and check it out next year, I know we will!

  1. Since we don’t live in the Golden Triangle anymore, this article was loaded with nostalgia for me. The Pecan Festival was fun for our whole family and I can easily agree with the fact that it is a one of a kind festival. My older son was in the band, so we always watch the parade. The rest of our family loved the rides, the food booths and the numerous booths selling arts, crafts, foods, etc. The community supported this event and it was such a wonderful gathering. I really miss those days. Thank you, Kim, for a this! It started my Monday off with a great memory.
